Newton Had it Only Partially Right, Jewelry Gurus of the World Unite, and Birthday Wish for Latte Lady

To bring you up to speed on all things Girl Friday, I have written a massive three-parter. Enjoy!

  • Laws of Gravity:

Sir Isaac Newton forgot to mention that sometimes, “what goes down, must come up.” At least that’s the experience I’ve been having with our shower drain. Fifty years worth of shower to shower goodness is making it’s way back up into our drain and also in my neighbor’s sink. As if life isn’t already stressful enough, now I have to take a bath every morning. Bathing should be relaxing, but I’m perpetually late and bathing is not really time efficient. I would also much rather sit with my laptop than sit in the tub. I’ve had to forgo my morning ritual of blogs and e-mail for pink porcelain and pruned fingertips. Also, there is no reciprocal relationship with my bathtub. Since I have less time to read blogs and write e-mail, no one’s writing me back so I have nothing in my inbox. I woke up this morning and the little red light on my BlackBerry was not blinking and doing its happy dance. I didn’t even have a stupid ad from BevMo or Kate Spade!

I feel very behind in most things right now. I am not done Christmas shopping. Don’t even talk to me about wrapping. I managed to put together The Pink Fairy’s package only a day behind schedule. I had the bright idea of sending her candy, so I apologize in advance if the Rocky Road looks disgusting upon arrival. I swear it’s still edible, even if it is smooshed and melted. My kitchen table looks like a recycling bin. It has scraps of this and that all over it. I wish I could say it’s because I’m crafting, but alas no. Notorious M.A.G. will have to settle for a store bought gift this year. That’s right, you heard me. I don’t have time to make crappy crafts.

  • Pimping the Bling:

A few months ago I participated in a blogging contest. As participants we were encouraged to read some of the other entries and link to them if we found them interesting. I found Sarakastic’s Gilmore Girls Fanatic blog and was hooked–not just because I’m a TV addict, but also because I enjoyed her topics and tangents. She has quite the impressive list of credits, among them are Bling on a Shoestring Jewelry and Putting the Sara in Sarakastic. I check out her stuff periodically (but always on Wednesday to get her side of the story from Tuesday’s episode). When my coworker tasked me with finding jewelry for his girlfriend that looks similar to something he saw in the new James Bond movie, I immediately thought of Sarakastic. She likes bling, she likes to browse online (because shopping is a hazardous hobby), and offers up her services as a personal shopper for fee. So I dropped her a comment, not expecting much aside from a few links and helpful tips. I was pretty amazed when she wrote a whole post on Casino Royale Earrings.

My coworker was impressed by my internet connections, and I was just impressed that Sarakastic was just so…cool. Since I am not up to my full blogging strength, I thought if I can’t write on a regular basis, I should at least pimp someone who does!

Also, after everything was said and done with the great earring hunt of 2006, I thought of my friend Robyn over at Neckcessories. She makes all her jewelry in a wide variety of colors and styles–but everything is sparkly and affordable–which was key for my friend who is a broke college student. It turns out that pimping is really easy and it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside!

  • 30 Going on 13:

Happy Birthday to Latte Lady! Another year down in the history books. Another year to embrace. I wish you the best of everything. May your coffee mug always be hot, may your fake engagement ring continue to ward off bozos at the gym, may your bank account increase and your worries cease. Rock on my sister-friend. In honor of you I will list my top five memories with you!

  1. Stapling, filing, alphabetizing are best enjoyed on a caffeine high and with snarky commentary.
  2. Pickles are for sharing, not off my plate, but as gag gifts!
  3. Long walks on the beach, candle lit dinners, sitting on the porch at sunset. Hmmm…this friendship sounds like a cheesy singles ad.
  4. “You’re fired.” “Frak!” “Your ass is ringing.” “It’s not so bad, being dead like me.” “I couldn’t help but wonder…” “Seven years ago I was recruited by a secret branch of the CIA…” “…she’s a marshmallow.” “Do you have any idea how frustrating it is being a lesbian ghost?” I’m sorry I have drawn you into my compulsive television watching world. It’s just so much fun to share my latest obsessions!
  5. Lady Latte, Laddy Late, or Latty Lade. Whatever way you spell it, you’ll always be Latte Lady to me. Thanks for being so encouraging. You were Girl Friday’s first office cohort and you’ve supported her through thick and thin. Thanks!
Happy Birthday!

Holiday How-Tos by Girl Friday

Like Joni Mitchell says, “It’s coming on Christmas, they’re cutting down trees.” In preparation for the holidays I decided to share my three standard candy recipes and two gift wrapping tricks. ‘Tis the season to be crafty!

  • Candy Making: I make three types of sweet treats every year–Rocky Road, White Flurries, and Peppermint Bark. They are each very simple and require only a bowl and a microwave.
Rocky Road

This recipe is tried and true. I learned it in 4-H Cooking when I was in fourth grade. I don’t think it’s possible to screw it up!

1 bag of chocolate chips (milk or semi-sweet, your choice)
1 bag of butterscotch chips
1 cup chunky peanut butter
1 cup smooth peanut butter (substitute with chunky if that’s all you have…no use in buying two kinds if you’re like me and only eat chunky)
1 cup dry roasted peanuts (salted or not, depends on if you prefer the juxtaposition of sweet and savory)
1 regular sized bag of mini-marshmallows (only use as many as your bowl will allow!)

Combine the chips in a large glass bowl and melt in the microwave. Start out with 45 seconds, check the chips, and add more time as necessary. It is imperative that you don’t over heat the chips! Use the spatula to mix and break up the chips.

When the chips are mostly melted (a few lumps are still fine) add the peanut butter. Heat in the microwave for another 30 seconds. Stir until the consistency is even. Add more time if needed.

Mix in nuts and then the marshmallows. Everything should be evenly coated. Spread mixture onto a cookie sheet in an even layer. Use an aluminum cookie sheet if you can, because you will need to use a knife later to cut individual pieces and you don’t want to ruin your Teflon coating.

Refrigerate until solid. Cut and serve on a plate or package up in cellophane bags. Keep refrigerated or it will get soft and melt.

White Flurries

1 box rice Chex
1 box corn Chex
1 cup dry roasted peanuts
1-2 packages white candy chips or white almond bark (whatever type you can find will work, but you will need at least 24 ounces)
1-2 cups pretzels (optional)
1 package of seasonal M&Ms (I make this for Valentine’s Day and you could also do it for Easter)

Spread out long sheets of wax paper on the counter for later use. Microwave white candy in large glass bowl starting out in 45 second intervals. Keep checking the candy and stirring. Do not overheat. Add in peanuts and pretzels (if desired). Add cereal. Do not over fill the bowl. Coat evenly. Spread out on wax paper to cool. If there is remaining candy in the bottom of the bowl, add more cereal and keep mixing. There are no precise measurements because this recipe can be adapted to fit whatever bowl size you have. Once the candy is solid again, break mixture into chunks, wrap up in a cellophane bag, garnish with M&Ms, and tie it up with ribbon.

Peppermint Bark

1 bag white chocolate chips
1 bag semi-sweet, dark, or milk chocolate chips (your choice)
1-2 candy canes (or whatever red and white peppermint candy you have available)

Break up peppermint candy and reserve in a small bowl. Pour chips into separate glass bowls. Heat the regular chocolate chips first. Heat in 45 second intervals and stir until consistency is even and creamy. Do not over heat! Using a sifter, add peppermint dust into chocolate. Spread onto wax paper or cookie sheet. This does not have to be neat. Let chocolate cool on the counter or stick it in the fridge if you have room. Heat white chips after the regular chocolate is firm. Spread white chocolate on top of the regular chocolate. Spread so it matches the size and shape of the firmed chocolate base. Sprinkle larger bits of peppermint on top. Let cool completely. Break into pieces and place on plates or cellophane bags.

  • Gift Wrapping Tips: The art of beautifully wrapping gifts does not have to cost a lot of money or strain your patience. It’s easy to improvise if you can get creative and think outside the box!
Treat Bags

If you can’t find cellophane bags or are cheapo like me and won’t spend more than a few cents per bag, you can make your own! Buy clear cellophane from a craft store. The more the better, and the cheaper it will be! Find a large mug or glass. Cut large pieces of cellophane and line the mug so that there is plenty of cellophane peaking out. Fill mug with treats and gather cellophane in a bunch. Pull out the makeshift sack and be sure you’ve given yourself enough excess so that your treats won’t spill out the sides. If it looks good, tie up with ribbon.

Bows

Do you suck at making bows? Have you not mastered curling ribbon? Do you think pre-fabbed bows in a bag are cheesy? Then tulle is your friend! It’s impossible to mess up! Buy white tulle at the craft store. Wrap your gift like you normally would, and then tie a bow out of tulle. Don’t forget to fluff the rounds of the bow. If you want a traditional ribbon look, cut points on the bottom pieces. You can also cut the rounds of the bow and make a poof of tulle. Tulle is fabric and it’s okay if it gets smooshed in transit. Simply fluff up your tulle when you get to your destination.

Happy Holidays from Girl Friday!

26 Years of Lucky 10-Key

Happy birthday to my dearest, oldest friend, Lucky 10-Key! Okay, so she’s not the OLDEST. I mean she has been my friend the longest out of all my friends. Lucky 10-Key is the first friend I made on my very own. We weren’t playpen friends, family friends, or god sisters. I met her in third grade and we’ve been two neurotic, shopaholic peas in a pod ever since.

To celebrate you, I present my list of the top ten Lucky 10-Key and Girl Friday moments (in no order except chronological):

4-H Camp: We made t-shirts with sponge paint and ceramic paperweights. I think we were in the Ponderosa cabin that first year, the second is a little fuzzy. We were miserable, but at least we had each other.

Sixth grade talent show: We did ballet en pointe to Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz of the Flowers.” It was a bit ambitious for the same forum in which the Ryans and/or the Nicks did a routine to Bel Biv DeVoe’s “Poison.”

Drama: The class and the years I will refer to as HELL (aka Junior High). Enough said. You were there. (This includes skater boys with hats and girls with big pie holes.)

Acceptance letters: You got yours and I got mine. We didn’t talk about them. We made up our minds. We ended up at the same school. The two girls who played under walnut trees and ran jog-a-thons grew up!

Red wine: We drank the whole bottle after The Loop. We went to the same college and were in the same sorority, but we had totally different experiences. I think the wine saved us from drifting apart even further. I really needed you for the next one.

Starbucks: How much coffee did we consume that summer in our zeal to be out of the house? How many times did we run into women with big pie holes? I’m glad you were with me. You made me brave.

Your interview: I read that entire novel (which wasn’t very good, by the way) in that café while I was waiting for you. I was worried a bum had snatched you up. I was glad you got the job, but I was sad when you moved away.

New York: It’s our place, babe. Thanks for inviting me to tag along. I hope I have been a good travel companion. I only got us lost a few times, and really, stopping off in Butik was fate not poor map-reading skills. Because of you I was able to trash the free Bill Rancic tickets my coworker was trying to give me today. I said, “I met him at a party. He’s a total tool.” Okay, maybe we didn’t actually talk to him…

Writing and stuff: Whether it’s notes we passed or notebooks that shall remain hidden in my closet, we’re always writing something. Thanks for being supportive and even letting me share things I’m sure you would have preferred to stay private. I really know that I need to post something if you’re complaining! Now we have that story going, too. I need to work on that!

Punk Cabaret: The Dresden Dolls concert, part deux. It was awesome and I’m glad I got to share it with you! Amanda is no Mariah Carey or Nirvana (oh, the many stages of our music!) but she rocks in her own right. And so do you.

I hope you aren’t mortified by this nostalgic list! I just wanted to say…hey, you’re pretty rad!

Happy Birthday!
