It’s Not You, It’s Me

I just want to say hello and thank you to my friends who have been inquiring what’s up with Girl Friday. I didn’t really mean to fall of the face of the planet, but life has been a little nutty lately. To catch you up to speed I have composed a lovely list of highlights:

  1. We’ve been living at the condo since November 12th. Prior to that we had the hardwood floors refinished, and had a dishwasher installed. Unfortunately, we had to keep the pink toilet, but I have to say it’s growing on me. I still have not caught up on laundry—it’s all in the cart that I stuck inside the bathtub, hidden by a lovely shower curtain. We still have boxes everywhere. I am in no rush to get everything unpacked as I have coined the term “Post- Modern Transit Chic.” Notorious M.A.G. is in full support of my decorating style, she claims to have two whole rooms in her house appointed in this décor.
  2. Work was horrible this month, but I’ve been making up my slacker time this week. My boss has been in Vegas, so I have arrived late, left mid-day to attend “work-related” parties, taken long lunches, and spent inordinate amounts of time chatting with international spies cohorts.
  3. I got in a smallish car accident today when I was leaving my very last physical therapy appointment. A judge backed into my poor, downtrodden car. As if it doesn’t have enough issues already! (The most recent problem is the driver’s side window. It won’t roll down. I guess it’s a good thing I’ve watched Alias enough to know how to escape from a submerged vehicle and survive!) I will hopefully take it in to the shop tomorrow and get some estimates for the repairs. Blah. Grr. I don’t know what else to say. Be careful out there. Driving is apparently dangerous.
  4. It is suddenly very cold. Dropping 30 to 40 degrees in the course of a few days is very difficult to adjust to gracefully. Yesterday I couldn’t find a sweater, so I wore a t-shirt and a scarf. I think I need to buy a really cute winter coat. Hopefully it’s not too rainy this year. Last year I wore my black raincoat everyday to work and hardly took it off, as our offices do not have overhangs or covered hallways between them. My nickname should have been Trinity.
  5. It cannot be Christmas. You’re joking with me, right? Where did the year go? I haven’t even bought The BF’s sunglasses I promised him for his birthday in May! My mom claims that this year I can get away with not buying presents since I am a new homeowner. Frak that, I love presents. I love giving them, and it’s not so bad receiving them. What’s on your list?
  6. TV watching has been the only normal thing in our household. All is right in the world when I have a full schedule! You can stop reading now if you are not a TV freak like me…
  7. Girl Friday’s TV Rants and Raves:
  8. My beef with Veronica Mars: Apparently I’m triple evil because I’m a feminist sorority girl who works in university administration. Hmmm…

My thoughts on Gilmore Girls: Emily and Richard’s snarkiness was Hi-larious. Luke is a great daddy-o. Kids at Yale wear too much clothing when they party. Please tell me it’s because they’re cold, and not just boring prudes?

My assessment of Studio 60: I can’t believe I’m saying this…Amanda Peet no longer irritates the crap out of me. That doesn’t mean I wanted to watch so much of her in lieu of quality Harriet and Matt time! And I LOVE LUCY DAVIS! She plays Lucy, the newbie writer. You may know her as Dawn from the UK’s The Office or Maria Lucas in the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice! She also had a cameo on Ugly Betty.

Speaking of Ugly Betty: Much love for Betty and Daniel. That is all.

Why Friday rocks: Where my pilots at? Latte Lady is just as impatient as I am to see Starbuck and Apollo throw down. Who needs Meredith for dark and twisty when you’ve got BSG?

With a Cherry on Top

I have been trying to hold on to my last shreds of sanity this week.  Lots has been going on at work—Dave’s back from paternity leave, I’m planning the travel itineraries for several coworkers, it is payroll close, and it was Halloween (a very big deal in a small University town).  On top of that I’ve been sneaking off to physical therapy (damn white collar injuries!) and jaunting all the way across town to do various things condo-related.

Still, I have managed to be a huge screw up in all arenas in life.  On Tuesday I avoided working for seven hours.  I haven’t really followed through on my physical therapy exercises consistently.  I spent two days feeling so desperate for creativity I thought I might never write again.  Today I managed to park for twelve minutes at the condo and get a ticket because it was street cleaning day.  Never mind that the BF and I had just put down a huge wad of cash for our refinished floors.  The only reason I didn’t throw a hissy fit was because I had just enjoyed my favorite meal at my favorite restaurant.  Food makes me happy, and apparently even forgiving.

I just wanted to let you know I’m still alive, though sometimes I want to hang myself in the enormous curtains that are currently balled up in the BF’s trunk.  Anyone have any ideas about how to replace 171×96 and 71×96 inch curtains for a reasonable price.  No?  I didn’t think so…

So after such a long list of reasons to be emo, I’m going to make like Oprah and tell you about a few of my favorite things.

  1. Cole Haan Shoes:  Seriously, just like Oprah, I too adore Cole Haan heels.  I wore my Paris heels to work on Tuesday because they went fabulously with my flapper getup.  (My coworker Nancy K. thought I was Laura Bennett from Project Runway.)
  2. Poppy Ring:  I got my Poppy Ring with a beautiful black pearl from the Darrien Segal this weekend.  I like to stare at it while typing at work.  Oooh!  Shiny!  I am so very easily amused.
  3. Wet & Wild French Manicure Set:  For just under $4 you too can have elegant French tip nails.  Patience and hand-eye coordination sold separately.
  4. TV!  My line-up includes:  The Class, How I Met Your Mother, Heroes, Justice, and Studio 60 on Mondays; Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars on Tuesdays; Top Model, Bones, and Top Chef on Wednesdays; My Name is Earl, The Office, Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy, and Six Degrees on Thursdays; Battlestar Galactica on Fridays.  Yes, I know I watch too much TV.  But you tell me where to cut back!  This is quality-programming, people!
  5. Pie and Cake:  It’s a Lisa Loeb album (that I don’t actually own…) and something tasty that I can’t get enough of.  I ate my favorite blackberry pie on Saturday when my parents came to town to help with a few small repairs (Hey!  That’s a Shawn Colvin album.  I don’t own it either…).  Today we had carrot cake at work for my coworker’s birthday.  Yum-o.  I am a dessert fiend!
  6. Last, but certainly not least, my favorite thing is you!  Thanks for reading the slightly incoherent ramblings from a nobody/Girl Friday/condo owner.  You rock like the casbah.

Welcome to Girl Friday’s House of Wit and Snark

I became a homeowner today! Well, condo owner to be precise. Here are some pics of random things I love about my 1100 square-foot, 1958 plush pad. I took these photos when Lucky 10-Key was out here for a visit.

Welcome!

Lot’s of nice greenery and fragrant flowers aboud. I took a picture of this Hibiscus for Queen of Anagrams.

We are refinishing the hardwood floors this week and should be all moved in by November 12. I’m excited! I still can’t believe a bank gave me a half a million dollars. It’s almost as unbelievable that I live in one of the most expensive cities in the United States. Crazy.

In other news: Snakes! Well, one snake actually…

I spent way too much time these past two days dealing with a boa constrictor in a resident’s apartment. I’ve spent at least six hours total discussing said snake, dealing with crazy Snake Girl’s freaked out roommates, talking about solutions with the directors, and telling everyone I know about said snake. You have to be ten shades of crazy to think that harboring an uncaged boa constrictor in your university apartment would be okay. Snake Girl is ten shades plus a whole bunch more—she sleeps with her snake, calls it her baby, and didn’t feel the need to inform her poor roommates.

So that’s Girl Friday’s week in a nutshell. I hope your was equally wonderful and strange!?
