Sweet!

It’s been a tasty couple of days, and I wish you were here! Since you can’t be here to share my delicious birthday cake, I’ve put together a how-to for making CANDY SUSHI! Lucky 10-Key and I recently made this when she came to town for a visit. We got the idea from Gilmore Girls. We were a little afraid that only Lorelai and Rory could stomach the combination of gummy candy, chocolate and rice krispies, but it turns out that candy sushi is totally a party in your mouth.

First, you’ll need to get all the ingredients for rice krispy treats. You can find the recipe on the back of the box. Next, stock up on lots of yummy candy. Lucky 10-Key and I bought Kit Kat, Snickers, Almond Joy, Jelly Bellies, and Red Vines. Don’t forget to buy some sort of strip candy—we got Fruit by the Foot because that was all we could find. For extra creative flair you can buy sprinkles for presentation purposes. We bought red ones to act as the smelt egg, but I forgot I have purple plates they didn’t really show up.

Second, clear a work space and gather your implements. You’ll need a flat surface to lay out the rice krispies, wax paper to roll your candy sushi on, a good strong knife that can cut through rice krispies and candy, and of course some plates.

Third, make the rice krispy treats. You’ll need to work fast before the treats cool and get too crisp to knead. Spread a thin, even layer of the mixture onto wax paper using your hands. Try to make the layer as rectangular in shape as possible.

Fourth, place the strip candy in vertical rows across the strip. The strip candy acts as the nori, the sheets of seaweed, used to wrap sushi. Cut candy bars or break off pieces and arrange them horizontally on top of the strip candy and rice krispies, allowing about a fingertip length of rice krispies and candy strip to be free so you can roll it. Add a row of jelly beans and/or licorice for additional color and flavor.

Fifth, using the wax paper, begin to roll the horizontal candy row. Try to keep it tightly together. The rice krispies should be pliable. Use your fingertips to keep it all in line. Once it is rolled over and the candy section is completely covered, cut the remaining section off. Keeping the roll horizontal, cut the pieces vertically.

Repeat the process until you run out of your sheet! Arrange on plates and enjoy!
