Note to Self

Dear Girl Friday,

Did you really think that you’d wake up on your 26th birthday and be “mature”?  Because news flash, that so didn’t happen.  Let’s hope that you will learn some valuable lessons soon:

It is unwise to lug note cards and stamps in your bag for three months with the grand idea of sending Thank Yous to relatives for Christmas gifts.  You will lose your stamps and spend the next two months searching your flat in vain.  Your friends and relatives have been greatly offended and you have little hope of winning them over again.  It’s possible your Aunt Roseanne has blacklisted you.

If your insurance company sends you a letter, you should read it and follow the directions to the ‘T’.  Do not wait to take action just days before the deadline.  This is how insurance companies make money—off of schmoes like you that are too disorganized to function.

Don’t be smug and superior-like just because you manage to clean and do laundry a few hours a week.  This hardly means you have your life together.  It simply means you’re better at hiding your disasters in your spacious cabinets.

Beating yourself up about your shortcomings doesn’t fix them.  Neither does blogging about them.

Peace, Find Inner The.

Sweet!

It’s been a tasty couple of days, and I wish you were here! Since you can’t be here to share my delicious birthday cake, I’ve put together a how-to for making CANDY SUSHI! Lucky 10-Key and I recently made this when she came to town for a visit. We got the idea from Gilmore Girls. We were a little afraid that only Lorelai and Rory could stomach the combination of gummy candy, chocolate and rice krispies, but it turns out that candy sushi is totally a party in your mouth.

Candy Sushi stuff

First, you’ll need to get all the ingredients for rice krispy treats. You can find the recipe on the back of the box. Next, stock up on lots of yummy candy. Lucky 10-Key and I bought Kit Kat, Snickers, Almond Joy, Jelly Bellies, and Red Vines. Don’t forget to buy some sort of strip candy—we got Fruit by the Foot because that was all we could find. For extra creative flair you can buy sprinkles for presentation purposes. We bought red ones to act as the smelt egg, but I forgot I have purple plates they didn’t really show up.

Second, clear a work space and gather your implements. You’ll need a flat surface to lay out the rice krispies, wax paper to roll your candy sushi on, a good strong knife that can cut through rice krispies and candy, and of course some plates.

Third, make the rice krispy treats. You’ll need to work fast before the treats cool and get too crisp to knead. Spread a thin, even layer of the mixture onto wax paper using your hands. Try to make the layer as rectangular in shape as possible.

Fourth, place the strip candy in vertical rows across the strip. The strip candy acts as the nori, the sheets of seaweed, used to wrap sushi. Cut candy bars or break off pieces and arrange them horizontally on top of the strip candy and rice krispies, allowing about a fingertip length of rice krispies and candy strip to be free so you can roll it. Add a row of jelly beans and/or licorice for additional color and flavor.

Fifth, using the wax paper, begin to roll the horizontal candy row. Try to keep it tightly together. The rice krispies should be pliable. Use your fingertips to keep it all in line. Once it is rolled over and the candy section is completely covered, cut the remaining section off. Keeping the roll horizontal, cut the pieces vertically.

Repeat the process until you run out of your sheet! Arrange on plates and enjoy!

Wish Lists

Girl Friday’s 26th birthday is on Tuesday, May 22! My birthday wish list is simple:

1. Good food: This won’t be too hard since I already have lunch plans with some coworkers and the BF will make/buy/order whatever I want for dinner.

2. Good day: I have to go to work, but as long as no one yells at me, I’ll be okay.

3. Good times: Even if the first two don’t work out I’ve still got an awesome evening penciled in—it’s the season (series?) finale of Veronica Mars.

Now, seriously people! My wish list is that simple, but I like to be a little more materialistic with my friends since most of them don’t live anywhere near me and I have no control over what they eat and do for their big day. So for fun,  fill out your wish list in a comment with three things you’d like for your birthday or any other gift-giving occasion and remember these items when your friends and family ask!

Also, what is your opinion on online wish lists? I have one at Amazon.com that the BF’s parents use religiously. It can be good and bad since I’m apt to ask for the same thing online as I do offline. This results in multiples…but I guess one can never have too many copies of Imogen Heap of the La Femme Nikita soundtrack.

The material side of me is excited about the Think chair that I’m probably getting from the BF. I have a blue one at work, but here’s the one I picked out:

Think

It’s very exciting. Whee! A chair!

Aside from that I’ve gotten a lovely amount of gifties already from other friends. Thank you all! It just wouldn’t be a birthday without maple sugar candy, a ginormous candle, and Australian pine cones!
